Dr. Bush and Dr. Snodgrass have read reports that older age can be associated with higher risk of complications after hypospadias repair. They decided to statistically analyze their data to evaluate if this was true in their patients. They found that age did not impact the rate of urethroplasty complications. In other words, no particular age was associated with a higher (or lower) risk of fistula or glans dehiscence. However, their study was not able to evaluate the psychological impact of waiting to have hypospadias surgery performed at an older age, particularly once permanent memories are established in children. While many, many parents have told us that their child’s hypospadias repair was easier when performed at a younger age, this study provides reassurance that the overall success of the surgery is similar when hypospadias repair needs to be postponed for older children.
