Hi, welcome back to PARC Parent Pointers Video Blog. If you haven’t already, please go check out my previous videos that go into detail about what to expect before and after hypospadias surgery in regards to feeding instructions, when to give pain medication, and surgery check-in times. This video is very similar to last weeks, but instead of talking about our younger kiddos it’s our older patients.
Activity After Adult Hypospadias Surgery
Many patients ask me when they can resume normal activity after hypospadias surgery. For our older patients (teens and adults), we ask that they are on strict bed rest for the first 2-3 days with minimal walking. This means you should try to rent a wheelchair from the airport or from your hotel to minimize excessive movement. The wheelchair will allow you to travel to hyperbaric treatments or places outside of his hotel without difficulty. For the first week after hypospadias surgery, we recommend our older patients taking it easy and trying to keep activity minimal. Physical activity, coach directed sports, and swimming (both chlorine and salt) can be resumed 2 weeks after the date of surgery. Heavy lifting and direct contact sports should not be resumed until 4-6 weeks afterwards. Additionally, there should be no sexual activity for the first 6 weeks after hypospadias surgery. Showers can be resumed 5-6 days after surgery and at that time it is perfectly fine if the bandages get wet. Once they loosen and begin to fall off they can be removed, or the night before the catheter removal please remove them and soak in warm water.
Please let our office know if you have any specific questions or concerns with activity after hypospadias surgery. You can either let our office know via phone at 214-618-4405 or via email at care@parcurology.com.
