Welcome back to PARC Parent Pointers! This segment is a continuation of hyperbaric treatments (HBOT). Many families want to understand more about hyperbaric treatments and what they are like. Today, I show you first hand what a mono-chamber facility looks like. As you can see, the patient gets inside this completely clear spacious tube by himself for the duration of treatments. This facility does not allow the parent to get inside with the child, but you can see how well the child is doing. While many parents think a mono-chamber sounds super scary, a lot of our patients do very well with this type of chamber. It is a clear spacious chamber that allows the patient to comfortably lay down as if they were laying in bed. The patient can watch TV and can hear everything that’s happening outside of the chamber as well as can be spoken to while inside the chamber. We recommend corresponding treatments with their nap time so that they fall asleep during the treatments.

You can feel comfortable because there is always someone present next to him that works at the chamber facility and the family is more than welcome to sit next to the patient as well. This provides a lot of comfort for our parents that come with the patient to each treatment, but cannot get inside with them. There is a phone so that your child can easily speak with you and see every move you make. Many families are concerned with how the chamber looks, how the chamber feels, and what to expect in regards to these treatments. I’m here to let you know that the process is fairly easy for our patients and can be a breeze if you know what to expect.
This particular facility follows our PARC protocol for hyperbaric treatments which are as follows: 60-minute treatments which do not include the time it takes for decompression and compression. For this facility, they take 15 minutes before and after the treatment to compress and decompress the chamber. The chamber should be compressed to 2.0 atmospheric pressure in order to notice the effects of hyperbaric treatments. I will speak in more detail about our PARC Protocol, the benefits of hyperbaric treatments for hypospadias patients, and whether your son will need it before/after surgery. Please join me next week for that information as we wrap up this segment on hyperbaric treatments. If you have any additional questions or concerns about hyperbaric treatments please let me know!
